Detrás del espejo - Lucy Angulo Lafosse (Galería Yvonne Sanguineti)

Les roseaux sauvages (1994)
Directed by André Téchiné

In the past, director André Téchiné has relentlessly pursued complex subjects. His films don't pander to the audience, nor do they allow the public to be emotionally detached. In "Les Témoins", for instance, AIDS is understood not as a simple disease but as something that profoundly alters social discourse and human interaction.

In "Les Roseaux Sauvages" there is an immanent bellicosity among France and Algeria which lingers on in the background long enough to affect the protagonists. At the beginning of the film a wedding becomes the scenario in which we observe Serge's brother clumsily plotting how to desert from French troops, while François is idly chatting with Maïté, a girl he doesn't love but dates nonetheless. The war strongly infiltrates the world of these youngsters, as a new student arrives to the boarding school attended by Serge (interpreted by Stéphane Rideau in what would be the first of many gay related productions) and François (interpreted by Gaël Morel, director of several films of gay interest), an older boy named Henri that has experienced the aftermaths of the armed conflict in the flesh.

After a couple of visits Serge pays to François in the middle of the night, the two boys soon become friends, but not before sharing some intimate secrets and practicing mutual masturbation and sexual intercourse. Of course, for Serge this one night stand is the product of wild hormones and teenage horniness, but for François this moment changes everything: he will come forward to Maïté and from that moment, what at first seemed a typical high school relationship, is utterly modified.

It's not long before Henri finds out, quite easily, about the sexual escapades of the two boys, but seems preoccupied only with the development of the war. Henri is unable to come through a normal grieving process regarding his father and the Algerian reality. The need for a symbolic death becomes patently necessary for Henri. Jacques Lacan defined the symbolic death as a narrative of closure, as the final sentence one must utter in order to let the dead ones go. If every culture in the planet respects some sort of funerary rites it is precisely because of that. The real death comes naturally when a heart stops beating, but the symbolic death is something cultural, something that depends on any given individual and the ability to cope with loss. Coming to terms with death means to be able to write that epitaph in our head, to be able to understand someone else's life and then to let go of it.
my sketch / mi boceto

Serge, on the contrary, will eventually accept the casualties of war, and instead of being paralyzed by death he will keep moving on. When Maïté's mother suffers a psychological breakdown after hearing about the demise of one of her students, her daughter feels devastated. None of this matters to François who's having a hard time understanding his own sexuality. A most relevant moment takes place when he confronts his image in the mirror and starts repeating "Je suis pédé", ashamed of being gay. This degrading word will lead to the reformulation of the object of desire, according to new terms and surpassing the phallic response; François's desire will be inextricably linked to the question of the desire of the other in its ethical dimension insofar as it bears the possibility of alterity, of authentic otherness. Of course it's never easy to be young and gay, but it's even more difficult in an isolated French province in the early 60s. It is then that Maïté's emotional support proves to be fundamental for François, as he will comprehend that his initial object of desire may well be out of his reach.

The characters of the film adopt contrasting postures. Serge and François possess an adaptability and flexibility that will become indispensable. Henri and Maïté, however, are determined and stubborn individuals. Henri's teacher tries to make him understand that being strong like an oak is a disadvantage as oaks break when the storm comes, only reeds survive the storm because they bend but do not break. Drawing a divisory line between war and sexuality, Téchiné finally gathers the three boys and the girl in one final sequence that instead of focusing on the cliché of hope is centered on the pervasive reiteration of uncertainty and friendship.

Neon Genesis Evangelion Vol. 5 - Yoshiyuki Sadamoto

Shinji Ikari
Having read superhero comics for most of my life I realized early on that you only intersect with them, however briefly, at some point in your life. When I was 13 years old I felt closer to Bart Allen (Impulse) who was also 13, but then I got older and he stayed the same age. When I was 15 and then 16 I shared some common traits with Robin (Tim Drake) and Superboy, but then I kept on growing and they didn’t. Established characters are frozen in an eternal limbo of agelessness. Time neither affects nor hurts them. I’ll soon be older than Bruce Wayne or Clark Kent, and I’ll understand why some writers hate the idea of writing about people who stay forever young.

Nevertheless, something different happened with Neon Genesis Evangelion, as I watched the anime at the time. When I was 14 I felt like I was simultaneously growing up with Shinji Ikari. He didn’t stay frozen in time. He was just like me, a kid learning to find his way into the world. Instead of a momentarily intersection, there was a vital confluence between us. Sounds rather odd, doesn’t it?  But trust me, there are odder things in this fifth volume, which includes stages 27 through 33: “The Party”, “Follow Back Along Your Scar”, “Centopath”, “Catch the G-Shock”, “NERV Blackout”, “The Abyss of Truth” and “Aquarium”.

I think I was 14 or 15 the first time I got drunk, and I mean seriously drunk. Although I hated to dance, I loved parties, mostly –or perhaps exclusively– because of the free alcohol. I had so much fun back then, I could almost step outside of my shell for once, I could almost let other people in. Sure, my first party was quite different from Shinji’s party, which is more of a spontaneous celebration after Misato has been promoted from captain to major, right after Asuka decides to move in with them. Shinji has as much fun with his friends –Toji Suzuhara, Kensuke Aida, Asuka, Misato and Ryoji Kaji– as I had with mine back in the day: “That night was the first time in my life I was ever at a real party… with real friends. I didn’t know anything could feel so good. But I couldn’t help thinking, in the corner of my mind that something so fun couldn’t last long”. Again, it felt like my thoughts were coming right out of Shinji’s mouth.
Rei, Shinji & Asuka

After a moment of joy comes a lifetime of sorrow. Or almost. There is a brutal encounter between Gendo Ikari and Shinji. His cold father acts in a way that resembles hatred but in true is only the most sincere indifference. He asks Shinji to never look for him again. For the boy, this feels like losing a parent, like being orphaned… but he was already used to not having a father around. No, the most painful part is that Gendo Ikari is still the commander of NERV, and he will still give orders to Shinji and the other Evangelion pilots.

Evidently, this situation makes Shinji feel depressed. And that almost costs him his life and the lives of every citizen of Tokyo 3 when he almost fails to catch a falling angel –Sahaquiel– the impact of this gigantic body would have meant the complete annihilation of Japan. Aided by Asuka and Rei, the threat is thwarted. Barely. Immediately after that, NERV is sabotaged and a power outage puts everyone on the verge of destruction. They are lucky to restore power, and luckier even to not have been attacked by an angel during that vulnerable moment. After the attack of five deadly angels, NERV had remained unscathed, but it took only the hand of a human to create the possibility of a real catastrophe. And isn’t that terribly human of us? To survive against impossible odds only to destroy ourselves?
Shinji and his best friends: Toji Suzuhara & Kensuke Aida / Shinji y sus mejores amigos: Toji Suzuhara y Kensuke Aida
Suspicions soon fall upon Ryoji Kaji, who might be a double agent working for Japan’s ministry of interior affairs. But it’s also Kaji who leads Misato and Shinji into Central Dogma, deep within NERV, and shows them Adam, the first angel: an abominable creature of gigantic proportions that lies pinned down to a cross. Adam’s genetic material was used to create the Eva, something that had been kept in secret. It is also thanks to Kaji that Shinji is able to recover a suppressed memory from his childhood: a dark secret that involved his father and his deceased mother.

After saving the world it's time to study for your midterms /

An unforgettable party / una fiesta inolvidable

Adam, the First Angel / Adán, el primer ángel

Oh yeah, tomorrow is Free Comic Book Day.

I wish I could be in New York to visit a dozen of comic shops and grab as many FCBD books as I can.

But sadly I’m stuck here in Perú, so my day of freebies has been reduced to 5 titles that selected in DCBS in January:

2000 AD SPEC

JUDGE DREDD CLASSICS

FANTAGRAPHICS PRINCE VALIANT

MARVEL INFINITY

WALKING DEAD SPECIAL

But of course, there are so many other great titles from pretty much every publisher of the comic book industry.

In fact, I had a hard time deciding what to get. I would have loved to receive other titles such as ABSOLUTION THE BEGINNING, APHRODITE IX, ATOMIC ROBO & FRIENDS, BLEEDING COOL MAGAZINE, BUCK ROGERS, ENDANGERED WEAPON B, HARBINGER WARS SPEC, MARBLE SEASON, MASS EFFECT KILLJOYS RIPD, MOUSE GUARD / RUST FLIP BOOK, OVERSTREET COMIC BOOK MARKETPLACE, RAMAYAN RELOADED, STAN LEE CHAKRA THE INVINCIBLE, STRANGERS, STEAM ENGINES OF OZ, THE RED TEN, VALIANT MASTERS SHOWCASE and WORLDS OF ASPEN.

Check this link and take a look at the good stuff:

www.freecomicbookday.com

What can taste better than a free comic book on a Saturday?

If you could only choose 5… which ones would you have picked?

Aldo Romero Scattolon

When I went to see Iron Man 3 (2013) with my friends I wasn’t sure what to expect. I wasn’t familiar with the work of Shane Black, the director, and I’ve seen many bad sequels, especially third parts... Nevertheless, the filmmaker takes advantage of the comic book in ways that the previous director wasn’t able to explore. Inspired by the Extemis saga (by Warren Ellis and Adi Granov), here we see a complex allegory of the war against terror, with an unprecedented level of sophistication and the right dosage of humor. Robert Downey Jr. continues to be a very charismatic Tony Stark, and Gwyneth Paltrow is a charming Pepper Potts, as usual. And this time, the villainous roles fall in the talented hands of Guy Pearce and Ben Kingsley. I won’t spoil the movie, but I’ll say that the Tony Stark we see here is more human, more vulnerable and, because of that, even more captivating than before. I also enjoyed seeing Ty Simpkins as Harley Keener and the after credits scene. If you’ve seen other Marvel movies then you must see this one. I recommend it.

When I heard about Cosmopolis (2012) I knew only someone like David Cronenberg would dare to adapt the highly intellectual story of Don DeLillo to the big screen; the plot is deceitfully simple: a young multimillionaire (Robert Pattinson) travels through New York in his stretch limo to get a haircut. The film has some truly fascinating moments and very intelligent dialogues; there is indeed something absolutely thrilling about the way in which the protagonist’s fortune evaporates in a single day while his limo is vandalized by activists. However, at moments Cronenberg gets a bit too hermetic, and relies excessively on words instead of actions. Surely, what worked in a book doesn’t necessarily work in a movie. Anyway, it was great to see such brilliant actors like Paul Giamatti and legendary actresses like Juliette Binoche.

People get old, but years are not the equivalent of maturity. True Adolescents (2009), written and directed by Craig Johnson, focuses on Mark Duplass a guy in his 30s with no job, no steady relationships, no future. A real loser who acts as immaturely as any 15 year old kid. And that’s what he will realize when he moves in with his aunt and she asks him to spend the weekend with her teenage son and his best friend (played by Bret Loehr and Carr Thompson respectively). The idea is to go camping, but soon the adult in charge proves to be as infantile as the two teenagers he’s supposed to take care of. There is a very revealing contrast between the man and his purposeless life and the aimless existence of two boys who are dealing with sexual awakening and hormonal confusion. This was a very enjoyable independent movie, and as a curious note I’ll say the promotional poster is drawn by comic book artist Cliff Chiang.

Perversion can take many forms. Bryan Singer knows that and he explores two basic aspects of perversion in Apt Pupil (1998). Brad Renfro is Todd Bowden, a 16 year old boy obsessed with Nazis who uncovers the true identity of a lonely old man (played by Ian McKellen) who lives a few miles from his house. He  isn’t a peaceful ‘grandpa’, he is a former Nazi officer, directly responsible for the death of hundreds of men, women and children in Auschwitz. Instead of worrying about getting laid or going to parties, like all his classmates, this teenager spends most of his time listening to the horrifying stories of the concentration camps. Ian McKellen, the Nazi, is an epitome of perversion: “the subject here makes himself the instrument of the Other’s jouissance”. By following the orders of Hitler, this Nazi officer becomes, in effect, an instrument of the will of joy of the Third Reich. Todd Bowden, on the other hand, experiences perversity differently: he orients his desires around the attempt to transgress the law and in so doing reinforces its bounds. He in fact, transforms his desire into the law, as he gets away with many things: lying to his parents, blackmailing his school counselor, killing a man, and transforming himself into a very successful high school graduate at the end, with a perfect future ahead of him. There is a reason why this is Bryan Singer’s best film to date and why I include it in my list of the best 100 movies of all times: It’s the idea that perversion is triumphant, not only in the case of the Nazi who has remained at large for decades but especially in the case of the boy. He’s brilliant, he’s the most promising student of his school, and yet he is a monster, he is a pervert who can’t get an erection when a girl unbuttons his pants but who can get very excited with notions like genocide. Todd is a fascinating character because his libido seems to be replaced by a death drive, but at the same time his lack of interest in girls, his fetishistic attraction in Nazi uniforms (designed by fashion industry icon Jean Paul Gaultier) and his tormented relationship with the German fugitive create a rich and disturbing homoerotic subtext that adds even more intensity and strength to this masterpiece of the 7th art.

Another example of perversion can be found in Keller - Teenage Wasteland (2005), written and directed by Eva Urthaler. This German production focuses on the lives of Ludwig Trepte and Sergej Moya, two 16 year old boys that become good friends, intimate friends. In fact, one of them is obsessed with the other, so much that he masturbates while smelling his friend’s clothes. This obsessed boy is the leader here, and he forces the other kid to kidnap a girl. Together they laugh at her as she desperately tries to break free only to piss on herself after so many hours of imprisonment. But as the days go by, the girl understands that he can seduce one of the boys in order to escape. This film is very intense, and cleverly shows the deliciously ambiguous relationship between both teenagers. A German gem. Too bad this was the first and last film the director made.

And finally, also from Germany, we have Zwillinge (2010), a short film about twins. One of them is about to get married and the other one pays him a visit. They share a very complicated past, and perhaps one of the most complicated things is that they have been sleeping with each other for years. Incest, homosexuality and youthful frustrations are fundamental aspects of Zwillinge.

Cuando fui a ver "Iron Man 3" (2013) no sabía qué esperar.

my sketch / mi boceto

my sketch / mi boceto

Neon Genesis Evangelion Vol. 4 - Yoshiyuki Sadamoto

Asuka Langley Soryu
“For most children, their first self-motivated act is to rebel against their guardian. It’s a validation of their own existence, as well as a test of the guardian”, says doctor Ritsuko Akagi. The permanent fight against authority seems to be a constant of adolescence. Shinji Ikari has already rebelled by trying to run away from NERV. Rei Ayanami, nonetheless, has a fixation with authority: she trusts only in Gendo Ikari –Shinji’s father and the Commander of NERV– her one and only fatherly figure. In many ways, Neon Genesis Evangelion was also a milestone of rebelliousness for me. I remember that although my father loved comic books he had an almost irrational hatred towards manga and anime, which rivaled my mother’s general despise towards all forms of graphic narrative. My passion for Neon Genesis Evangelion was deeply disturbing for both of them but I had to rebel against my guardians… and I did.

But perhaps no one is more of a rebel than Asuka Langley Soryu. She alone defeats an aquatic angel –Gaghiel– by leaping from one transatlantic to another in the middle of the ocean. It takes her only seconds to destroy the threat, thus proving that her control and mastery over her Eva Unit-02 is remarkable. But she is also a very energetic girl and so very competitive, certainly, she’s the opposite of Shinji and Rei. When Shinji tells Rei that he doesn’t know if he’ll get along with the new girl, Ayanami replies with her usual pragmatism: she’ll get along with her, if she’s ordered to.
Shinji & Asuka

From the very beginning of this volume (which includes stages 20 through 26: “Asuka Comes to Japan”, “The Un-invited”,“Asuka Attacks”, “Try, Try Again”, “Dissonance”, “Shall We Dance” and “One Moment, One Heart”) a cat and mouse game takes place between Asuka and Shinji, clearly, she’s the dominant one, and the boy feels overpowered by a girl that is so hot that she instantly becomes the object of desire of every male around her. But for all her brilliance and superior intelligence, Asuka is still a 14 year-old girl. And she is always trying to mock Shinji in such juvenile ways that it is refreshing to see her doing so.

And soon, a new angel –Israfel– arrives. With the ability to duplicate itself and attack in unison, it is a formidable foe. Shinji and Asuka cannot defeat it, no matter how try they hard, unless they learn first to attack together in perfect harmony: they must be one mind in two bodies. And in order to accomplish that, Misato orders them to live together, to sleep and wake up at the same time, and to dance, over and over again, until they reach a perfect coordination of movements. This is no easy task, I understood Shinji’s problem right away: you see, I also hated to dance. At the same time, I found Asuka’s complaints hilarious. At first, she refuses to share her bedroom with a member of the opposite sex, alleging that Shinji might get horny in the middle of the night and assault her. Such feeble argument makes Misato laugh, and she affirms that the boy wouldn’t have the guts to do so.
Eva Unit-02 / Eva Unidad 02

Is Misato right in assuming that Shinji poses no real sexual threat to Asuka’s integrity? The first thing that Asuka does is test Shinji. She enters the room wearing nothing but a towel and asks Shinji if he wants to see her naked. The teenaged boy reacts very nervously, and refuses to participate in this erotic foreplay. But why is that? Is it out of an old-fashioned sense of chivalry? Is it pure prudishness? There is something deliciously ambiguous about the way Shinji carries himself around Asuka. And I can’t quite put my finger on it but there is something about him that makes me think that –in a similar situation–  I would have reacted pretty much in the same way, but then again, I wouldn’t be the only one…

Eventually, Shinji and Asuka learn how to be one mind in two bodies. And it is thanks to what they have accomplished together that they are able to kill the dual angel. I used to feel slightly uncomfortable with Asuka when I first watched the anime. Now, seeing her again after so many years, I’ve grown very fond of her. In fact, she reminds me of one of my best friends: she lives in Belgium now, but her energy and enthusiasm are always with me.

Asuka pinching Shinji / Asuka pellizcando a Shinji

Shinji and Asuka in harmony / Shinji y Asuka en armonía

Watching the Battle: Gendo Ikari, Ritsuko Akagi & Misato Katsuragi /
