April Films / películas de abril

I only saw one film last month: Into the Forest (2015), an extraordinary story about the fragility of civilization. Director Patricia Rozema adapts Jean Hegland’s novel about a massive power outage in the near future. Deprived of electricity and gas for months, the delicate structure of civilization starts to fall apart, however, the process is slow, and the changes that take place are almost imperceptible at first. Rozema captures magnificently the subtlety of a society on the verge of collapse, and the experiences of people that are desperate to return to their old, familiar and comfortable lives. Ellen Page (To Rome with Love) and Evan Rachel Wood (The Conspirator) are two young sisters who live in an isolated house in the woods, and they must learn how to survive in a world that is turning into a very dangerous place. It is fascinating the way these two girls find strength in each other. However, despite all their resourcefulness, they won’t be able to prevent the real catastrophe: the threat of other people. There are impressive scenes, and some truly heartbreaking moments; Rozema creates sequences of incredible emotional power and moments that resonate with us in ways we did not anticipate.
