Witch Doctor Mal Practice # 2 - Brandon Seifert & Lukas Ketner

Lukas Ketner

Witch Doctor is sick, and he’s desperately trying to find a cure. After all, his life depends on it. Dr. Vincent Morrow and paramedic Gast visit the Red Market, a rendezvous point for people interested in the arcane arts and the illegal trafficking of spells. This is a place visited by many, but only a few know where to find the good stuff. The doctor, of course, knows who might help him: Old Man Moonshine, a magical practitioner that looks just like a hobo.

I’ve mentioned before that Brandon knows what he’s doing. He has even mentioned in the letter column that after intensive research he also has a couple of ad honorem consultants (a doctor and a biologist). And all that effort shows, especially in a fantastic sequence in which Vincent Morrow inspects the corpses of Old Man Moonshine’s friends. He determines the cause of death, after inspecting the bodies and reaching a logical conclusion: two different mystical creatures have attacked them at the same time, something odd because monsters tend to be territorial. The explanation of how the creatures look and act, is amazing. This is a great example of imagination and creativity; there’s no need for us, the readers, to have any ‘suspension of disbelief’, we can believe everything Morrow says from the get go. The effort here, really, would be to consider this as a simple imaginary tale. It is that good.
mystical diagnosis / el diagnóstico místico

My second favorite moment takes only five pages: it’s the first appearance of the Surgeons, creatures that seem straight out of a Hellraiser inspired nightmare or a cross between a postapocalyptic Steampunk world and the gore of movies like “Saw”. I don’t know what Lukas had in mind when he read Brandon’s script, but I’m absolutely sure that not even the writer could have imagined how great his creations would look like. Lukas is an extraordinarily talented artist, his mastery over horror blends in perfectly with his complete dominion over design.

I was so thrilled with the comic that it took me a while to get to the letters section. And there I found another great surprise: my letter was published! So without further ado, here it is:

The summoning / la invocación
Hello Brandon and Lukas:

It’s not easy to write a one-shot, and yet, Witch Doctor the Resuscitation was an awesome issue. Most writers nowadays seem to be obsessed with the 6-issue arc structure and sometimes I find that a bit tedious. So I’m thrilled to see that WD can work in a single issue just as good as it does in a 4-issue miniseries.

By the way guys, I just wanted to say THANK YOU for publishing my letter, it is truly a unique honor, perhaps even more special than being magically tied up by your future soul-mate while you’re investigating a deceased -and dismembered- ancient god.

I’ve seen dozens of guys complaining about WD not being an ongoing, I’d hate to be the devil’s advocate here but I am more than satisfied with WD as a miniseries right now. Image is putting out so many amazing titles and my budget is so limited that I honestly couldn’t afford more ongoings. Miniseries, on the other hand, are always a sure buy for me. Out of 10 titles I buy, only 3 are ongoing and the rest are minis, that’s the only way I can keep up with Image nowadays. Meanwhile, I can’t wait for the next WD one-shot or mini. Don’t make us wait that long, eh?

The Surgeons / los Cirujanos

my letter published / mi carta publicada
