January Comic Books / Cómics de enero

It doesn’t matter if it’s 2015 or 1988, Alan Moore continues to be the best writer of the medium. Miracleman is getting better issue after issue, and Crossed Plus One Hundred # 2 was the best comic of the month. As a general rule I never buy Star Wars comics, but as a general rule I always buy everything John Cassaday does, so I read January’s best selling title (over 800,000 units, breaking every sales record of the past 2 decades) and it sure was a lot of fun. Jupiter’s Legacy, The Autumnlands: Tooth & Claw, and The Wicked + The Divine were quite good. And now, without further ado, here are January comics as per solicitations:

CROSSED PLUS 100 #2 FUTURE TENSE CVR (MR)
(W) Alan Moore (A/CA) Gabriel Andrade. Writer:  Alan Moore Covers and Art: Gabriel Andrade  Alan Moore places his unique stamp upon the Crossed universe, as he and artist Gabriel Andrade paint a vivid picture of the future 100 years after the outbreak!  Future Taylor leads a salvage team that is exploring the ruins of Tennessee. She tries to piece together the past, while they gather supplies for the future.  Together with the settlement of Chooga, they take the tentative steps of a new generation as they attempt to understand the horror that nearly wiped out the human race.  But disturbing threads emerge, some sightings of Crossed occur, and a century-old mystery begins to be revealed.   This multi-layered story delivers a new brand of horror to Crossed fans at the hands of the scribe that redefined the comics medium.  Enter Alan Moore's world of grueling survival with Crossed +100.    This masterwork is a self-contained whole new world, no prior knowledge of the Crossed series is needed.  All the covers for the series have been planned out by Alan Moore, with the images enriching and expanding on the series.  Clues and glimpses of what came before, and what might be, are found throughout the variant covers.  American History X Wraparound - Each of these will depict a specific time in the past hundred years, showing how things have changed and offering a peek at some key events.  Each cover will display the year in which it takes place to help build the full picture.  Crossed Culture  - These are all images of how the Crossed have changed the way they live.  With few humans left to hunt,  and the animal kingdom thriving with predators, even the thrill-driven Crossed have had to make adjustments to their lifestyle.  Future Tense - Each cover is a homage to a famous work of science fiction, and each of those original works ties into themes of this series.  New World Order Wraparound - These are not for the faint of heart or delicate of constitution.  We can't even picture them in this catalog, they are visions of what an ideal all-Crossed world would be.  If the madmen have their dreams come true, what would the everyday life look like® These covers are brutally intense images of true horror and may have scenes of torture, depravity, and nudity. These are clearly for adults only.  Each copy of this edition will ship in a sealed polybag with a protective slip cover over the actual image to assure it can be racked in stores.  The graphic pictured here is the slip cover only.  Due to all these special protective measures this edition is strictly limited to initial orders.  Also available with  Retailer Incentive covers of Red Crossed and Design Sketch, showing the original works of series artist Gabriel Andrade.  Don't miss out on the ultra-rare CGC Numbered Edition as well!

Jupiter’s Legacy, The Autumnlands: Tooth & Claw, y The Wicked + The Divine estuvieron bastante bien.

CROSSED PLUS 100 #2 FUTURE TENSE CVR (MR)

SANDMAN TP VOL 08 WORLDS END NEW ED (MR)
THE SANDMAN #51-56. Neil Gaiman et al.

STAR WARS #1

TOOTH & CLAW #3 CVR B ROSS (MR)

It’s time to say Merry Christmas. There’s an old saying that goes “the more the merrier”, and that applies perfectly to comics! I read two wonderful Young Avengers issues, and I was nicely surprised by Jason Aaron’s high level of quality (Wolverine & X-Men, Thor God of Thunder and Thanos Rising have been very good). Velvet # 1 was such an extraordinary comic (and it had some of the most beautiful Epting pages I've ever seen). This month we say goodbye to Unwritten, Vertigo's finest ongoing series (there will be one final miniseries next year, though). And I loved Guardians of the Galaxy. Kick-Ass was amazing but if I had to choose my two favorite books of the month they would be Sandman Overture and Alex + Ada (both first issues). And now, without further ado, here are November comics as per solicitations:

Y me encantó Guardians of the Galaxy.

SANDMAN OVERTURE #1 (OF 6) CVR A (MR)

X-MEN #1 NOW

Hero Comics 2011 - Neil Gaiman

Ralph Reese
I think we all know that the comic book industry hasn’t been too kind with creators in past decades. As a result, many comic book creators have struggled to obtain that which is a given in any traditional line of work, such as medical insurance. “The Hero Initiative is the first-ever federally chartered not-for-profit corporation dedicated strictly to helping comic book creators in need. Hero creates a financial safety net for yesterdays' creators who may need emergency medical aid, financial support for essentials of life, and an avenue back into paying work. It's a chance for all of us to give back something to the people who have given us so much enjoyment”.
Every year, Hero Initiative puts together a comic book anthology that features the work of some the most prestigious writers and artists of the industry. Hero Comics 2011 reunites the original Sandman creative team for the first time in over 20 years: Neil Gaiman, Sam Keith & Mike Dringenberg. This dream team (no pun intended) come up with “My Last Landlady” a very poetic story fueled by the impressionistic art of two professionals that are way above your average penciler. It’s a mixture of horror and sadness, conformism and ordinary life; in only a handful of pages Gaiman, Keith & Dringenberg create a broody tale that deserves our attention.

In subsequent pages, and sort of like a “behind the scenes”, Sam Kieth illustrates the process of reuniting with Gaiman and Dringenberg to work together. Copying paragraphs from e-mails, Kieth creates a visual journey jam-packed with symbolism and experimentation. It’s such a delight to read the crazy emails these talented people send to each other. It truly complements “My Last Landlady”.
Kieth & Dringenberg

We also have a fantastic page by legendary artist Ralph Reese, famous for his marvelous works in titles like Creepy (I’ve always been a huge fan of his work and I think he was one of the best artists in the 70s). John Layman and Rob Guillory share their most beloved creation, Chew, in a very funny story about experimental drugs. And also from Image, comes Elephantmen by Richard Starkings and Doug Braithwaite; this is a short story about the way that society deals with elders.
Doug Braithwaite

For 3.99, this is a real bargain. Besides getting an awesome comic, you’re also helping creators in need. I’m glad to help and to be a part of this. For more information visit www.heroinitiative.org and make sure to donate a few bucks.

Un gran complemento para “My Last Landlady”.

Tonight was a great night. I had so much fun at Enlace Gallery, running into old friends, eating some of my favorite delicatessens and, of course, drinking red wine. I had the chance to talk with artist Roberto Cores, who hadn’t been in Peru for the last couple of months; and just like in other inaugurations, he explained to me why he enjoyed the paintings of some of the Chilean artists reunited in the exhibit. “Rasgos Emotivos” presents artistic work from eleven contemporary artists from Chile and if there is one thing in common is quality. These are not neophytes but well trained artists that know exactly what they’re doing and why. When I was talking with one of them, Cristian Velasco, I understood the reasons behind his proposal; the use of carefully executed embroidery in his pieces is a homage to family hobbies as well as an understanding and fascination with such activity; as he explained to me, he uses graphic references, then traces a selected image on the computer and then that goes to the final piece, obeying an aesthetic purpose that’s all about the design, no wonder then, that his work is part of the Luciano Benetton collection. In all of his pieces there is also a special focus on street vendors or people who practice clandestine business outdoors, the image in the catalogue (right bottom corner) shows us a person carrying a bunch of mattresses.

This week I was also very taken with a Kickstarter project. It’s all about Michael Zulli. Zulli is not only an acclaimed artist who’s worked with Neil Gaiman in Sandman, but also one of the most talented pencillers and inkers I could think of. Without the support of traditional publishing companies, he has ventured into creating something very unique and special: Fracture of the Universal Boy. I have already made a contribution to his project. I felt it was the least I could do for an artist I have always respected and admired.

And finally, my second signed edition (plus sketches) goes to one of my best friends: Rodrigo Castro, who also happens to be a big comic book fan. He was very supportive with my first works and I feel he deserves a special treat.
