Les dents du recoin - François Boucq

A century ago, surrealism rose to prominence in Paris. Quickly, this cultural movement would transform the plastic arts, poetry and even cinema; of course, surrealism would go everywhere, surpassing all geographical limits, and reaching even the most unknown corners of the planet. From the beginning, there was a close relationship between surrealism and image (painting, engraving, illustration, etc.). Logically, comics were also inspired by this new trend; for example, some of the greatest works of the 9th art in the early 20th century (“Little Nemo in Slumberland” by Winsor McKay) stand out thanks to their undeniable surrealistic tone.

Evidently, over the decades, the French bande dessinée would also join the surrealist revolution, with incredible results. In fact, “Les dents du recoin” (“The Shark's Teeth”) is one of the most original, intelligent, funny and daring graphic novels I have read in my life. François Boucq, one of France's best authors, decided to write and draw the peculiar adventures of Jérôme Moucherot, an animal and a man, an insurance salesman in the skin of a leopard who must survive in the urban jungle, in a world that has faced some indescribable cataclysm.
Jerome at the bar / Jerome en el bar

Boucq provides us with double doses of humor; on the one hand, at the graphic level, we have hilarious scenes, and at a purely narrative level, we have hilarious conversations between the protagonist and his colleagues, all insurance salesmen, while they fight with other animals in the neighborhood bar. Like all wild beasts, Jérôme easily disturbs herbivores (portrayed as vegan athletes of little courage), but he himself must also confront powerful predators or simply depraved creatures like the tribes of nomadic smurfs, capable of dismembering and devouring an entire dinosaur in a matter of minutes, or "gutting" the wallets of innocent old women.

Boucq uses all the elements at his disposal to makes us laugh, and his absurd but extremely ingenious dialogues, complemented with a great sense of humor, will remind us of great French-speaking playwrights like Eugène Ionesco. When Jérôme arrives home, he is greeted by a loving wife and three adorable children, who try to eat a giant mastodon steak (bought by the wife in the supermarket, simply because it had a special discount). Nevertheless, the blood of this antediluvian animal attracts a dangerous shark that navigates in the blue walls of the dining room.

When the shark engulfs Jérôme’s younger son and plunges into the wall, the desperate family man seeks help; and therefore goes to the apartment of Leonard De Vinci, a scholar, a Renaissance scientist, an inventor, and a man who enjoys dancing with his young assistant, who dresses only in suggestive lingerie. Jerome invades the intimacy of master Leonard, but the wise man decides to offer his support.
Shark attack / el ataque del tiburón

That is the beginning of a delirious journey, rich in fantastic and dreamlike elements. Boucq unfolds before our eyes a true visual banquet, embracing the full power of surrealism and enhancing it with literary absurdity. The extraordinary art of Boucq exudes vitality and an insane beauty that surprises us and attracts us at the same time. Watching the protagonist crossing the impossible seas of the dimension of the walls is a real delight. There are precious pages, unforgettable, and at all times, we see the creativity and absolute graphic mastery of a truly excellent artist.

the journey begins / el viaje comienza

the journey continues / el viaje continúa
